Many people underestimate the benefits that comes from the practice of fasting. That thinking might change if you break down the effects of fasting–hour-wise–on the body. To accomplish this we spoke with Dr. Maneendra Consultant and HOD Critical Care department, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad.
“When you fast, the body undergoes several physiological changes over time as it adapts to the absence of food,” said Dr. Maneendra.
What happens:
1 – 4 hours immediately after meals the body is focused to digesting and absorption of nutrients. “Blood sugar and insulin levels rise, providing energy,” Dr. Maneendra.
4.5-8 hours When digestion is complete the insulin and blood sugar levels decrease. Dr. Maneendra explained glycogen is the energy source used by the body (stored sugar) in the muscles and in the liver to provide energy.
8-12 hours After glycogen reserves diminish, the body will use fat as energy source. According to Dr. Maneendra this process is known as ketosis. This is when the fatty acids transform into ketones that fuel the muscles and brain.

12- 16 hoursThe human body remains in burning fat, and ketone levels are elevated. “Growth hormone production could rise, which aids in the breakdown of fat and maintaining muscle mass
16 to 24 hoursAutophagy starts when the cells begin to heal themselves by taking down damaged parts. Dr. Maneendra stated that inflammation is reduced and the body’s attention is on maintaining its cells. “Autophagy is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. Reducing your daily calorie intake by 10-40 per cent can trigger autophagy,” explained Parmeet Kaur Chef and Chief Nutritionist and dietician at Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram.
Kaur added the possibility that autophagy could increase in the activities that cause stress to cells, for example, an absence of nutrients after prolonged fasting of up to three days.
24-hours:Ketosis gets worse, as autophagy is increased. ” Insulin levels drop significantly, promoting fat loss and enhancing the body’s ability to manage blood sugar,” Dr Maneendra said. Dr. Maneendra.
However, Dr. Maneendra stated that a fast lasting more than 24 hours must be done under the supervision of a medical professional since it could result in nutritional deficiency and other issues.
